It’s October 15th, and for those in the commonwealth that only means one thing. Welcome back, basketball season! From Paducah to Pikeville, teams from all over the commonwealth begin their season with a hope of being the last team standing at Rupp.
There are 290 schools associated with the KHSAA, most having both boys and girls basketball teams, starting today those student athletes are working to try and get to Rupp Arena.
On the girls side, you have to ask yourself, “Can anyone end the run that Sacred Heart is on?” ZaKiyah Johnson is off to LSU, and with Sacred Heart winning the last 5 titles on the girls side a lot of coaches were probably happy to see her move on to college. Coach Moir is one of the best coaches in the state, so no doubt the Valkyries will be ready for another deep run in March. One of their biggest challengers in the preseason looks to be Coach Robbie Graham and his GRC Lady Cardinals. Last season Sacred Heart and GRC played in a classic game with SH coming out on top 65-60. GRC welcomes back Junior Kennedy Stamper (Cincinnati commit), Senior Teigh Yeast (RMU commit), along with senior Anaya Chestnut coming back from injury. Add another year of Kyleigh Stakelin, Kyleigh Chestnut, Jaylynn Goodwin, and E’liyah Strode, even after losing Ciara Byars, this might be the deepest team Coach Graham has ever had.
Here in Montgomery County, head coach Jordan Perry is starting his second season leading the Lady Indians. Last season his Lady Indians put together a 20-13 season, and advanced to the region tournament before falling to Bishop Brossart to end the year. Good news is, coach Perry returns Senior Addison Terry, Junior Baylee Warner, Junior Sophie Fouch, and freshman Raegan Mays, that all started last season. PA Routt & Hallie Wilson look to play a big role off the bench this season, giving the Lady Indians a bit of depth. The lady Indians will get things started on December 3rd when they make the trip to Bath County to take on the LadyCats.
Now, switching over to the boys side 2025 saw Malachi Moreno & crew cut down the nets bringing Great Crossing their 1st boys basketball state title in the school’s short history. Great Crossing is looking to become the first back to back state champs since Fairdale did it back in 1990 & 1991. North Laurel lead by senior Reece Davidson looks to be one of the teams ready to hoist the trophy in March. In two tournament games last season, Davidson averaged 38.5 ppg!
Here in the 10th Region, the question that will be asked all year is, “Is it GRC or Montgomery County?” GRC brings back seniors Malachi Ashford, Amari Bartelson, along with juniors Montez Gay & JaMylyn Johnson, also added sophomore Ryder Akins to an already talented roster. Meanwhile, Montgomery County is looking to replace Cayden Reed, Luke Fawns, and Ethan Dunn in the rotation. It’s a task that will be extremely difficult to do. Good news is, Montgomery County still has Senior Dawson Gentry, Junior Tyce Jarvis, and sophomore Andrew Terry to build around!
